Every time I send an e-mail from this account which is set up as POP3, a copy is sent to the same account. Any idea why?

The copy should go to the Sent folder, not the inbox. Check the setting in Account Settings > Copies & Folders in an account to see where a copy is placed.

Do you have "Place replies in the folder of the message being replied to" checked? That would probably do it. You should uncheck that.
