When I visit sites like Amazon.com the page loads then something in the background loads or tries to load over and over. What I see is the page loads and then 2 seconds later the tab goes nuts as the browser is trying to load and reload for 2 or 3 times a second for about 10 seconds. I have some add-ons but they don't seem to affect it at all whether they are disabled or not. I don't have a virus or anything. It only seems to happen in certain websites.

Please update to the current Firefox 30 release.

  • Help > About Firefox

The Firefox version that you currently run is no longer supported with security updates.

  • It is important to update Firefox and add-ons to the latest version to get all security fixes.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem
