Do you still can find those bookmarks in the Bookmarks Manager (Library; Show All Bookmarks)?

Firefox only keeps 10 JSON backups of the bookmarks, so you need to backup them all to be sure not to lose any of them. You can find them in the bookmarkbackups folder in the profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

Current releases compress the automatically created backup and give them a .jsonlz4 file extension. There is also a hash ($$$) appended after the date and bookmark count (xxx) in the bookmarks-####-##-##_xxx_$$$.json file name to avoid unnecessary duplicate backups, so you can see if there have been changes (drop in the bookmarks count) in the ten available backups.
