Getting a black screen after updating to Firefox 33 can be caused by a problem with hardware acceleration in Firefox.

You can start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift/Options key (Safe Mode disables hardware acceleration).

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

Note that there is a Firefox 33.0.1 release scheduled that addresses some hardware acceleration related crashes.

Hold down the <Shift> mac <Command> key, and start Firefox. This will put it in Safe mode.

Did you try to start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key while starting like I wrote above?

You can also make a copy of the Firefox desktop shortcut and add a space and -safe-mode to the target line.

In order to start up in Safe Mode, you need to first close the blacked-out Firefox. You can use the Windows Taskbar icon (right-click > Close window) to do that.
