there are many old links out there that seem to point to the, now obsolete, globs.org page, but I'm not seeing current extensions that work with Thunderbird 24. Have I overlooked them?

The short answer is no. It is a couple of years since it was acknowledged that significant updates to core would be required for such scheme to work.
