My T-bird was crashing a lot and very slow , so I cleaned 2 years worth of old mail out of the "All Mail" folder. Now, the "All Mail" function hangs and if I try to open mail or go to another folder, my T-Bird crashes. it also does not send a crash report. I have reinstalled, but no change. For several months it has been arbitrarily sending some mail to Trash and I have not been able to find a way to stop it, so I need to check the Trash every day. I am synced with g-mail, but the Gmail account does not receive the mail trashed by T-bird. I am afraid to uninstall T-bird because I may lose all my old email. Solutions?

Chosen solution

Gmails 'All Mail' folder is the Archive folder and holds a copy of all your emails.

So if you have subscribed to see it and also synchronised it, you will double the size of your Profile.

All gmails emails are stored in 'All mail'. Labels are applied so that you can see them as if in various folders. If you delete any emails from 'All Mail' then those emails will be deleted from any other folders they may be in.

Can you confirm it's been crashing or not responding?

The app trying to access "All Mail" spins as if it is looking for something and then "fails to respond", crashing the entire program

There is a difference between hanging and crashing. http://www.cyberlink.com/support/faq-content.do?id=14592

You aren't very clear what's actually happening.

What do you need 'All Mail' for in the first place?

What is your anti-virus software?

"All Mail" was there when I downloaded T-bird years ago. Not sure whey it is there. However, the problem seems to have fixed itself - 7400 old emails just show up in my trash, I emptied them and now T-Bird is working fine. Not sure where they came from (probably from "All mail" when I clean it out. Thanks for the link to the article on hang ups - now I understand much better what goes on. Also thank you for your advice and willingness to help others. It is people like you who make the world work (to the extent that it does!)
