UI seems enlarged and blurry.

I have used firefox for years and never encountered a problem like this. On my laptop, the most recent update seems to have caused the displayed text and some GUI elements to be rendered at a lower resolution then upscaled to my laptop's 1080p display (I don't know if that's what it's doing, just comparing it to an example). Everything seems magnified and blurry as if I set the windows UI to scale at 125% (But not that extreme). If I zoom out on the text, it is no longer legible, even though similar sized text is resolvable in other applications.

Could you check to make sure Firefox is not set to use any backwards compatibility options? To do that, either:

  • right-click your Firefox desktop shortcut > Properties > Compatibility tab
  • right-click your pinned Taskbar shortcut for Firefox > right-click Mozilla Firefox > Properties > Compatibility tab

To take full advantage of Windows 8.1, make sure there is nothing selected on this tab.

If you changed that, you probably need to exit Firefox and start it up again to see any difference.

By the way, Windows 8.1 might actually default to a "Text Size" of 125% on many laptops. Firefox has imported and applied that setting since version 22. Firefox 38 is the first version that applies system-level HiDPI settings on Linux, but I don't think that is relevant to you.

You can try to set the layout.css.devPixelsPerPx pref on the about:config page to 1.0 You can adjust layout.css.devPixelsPerPx starting from 1.0 in 0.1 or 0.05 steps (1.1 or 0.9) to make icons show correctly.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Use an extension to adjust the text size in the user interface and the page zoom in the browser window.

You can look at this extension to adjust the font size for the user interface and possibly use its Zoom setting instead of modifying the above mentioned pref.

You can look at the Default FullZoom Level or NoScript extension if web pages need to be adjusted after changing layout.css.devPixelsPerPx.

Unfortunately, none of these seem to have worked. I guess I should have mentioned that I tried the about:config trick before, which is where I discovered that the title bar appears to the tho only thing correctly sized. Also, I thought I mentioned before (guess I didn't) that my windows size is set to 100%.

Could you try disabling Firefox from using hardware acceleration? Visual weirdness can indicate incompatibility with your graphics card/chipset drivers.

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"

This takes effect the next time you exit Firefox and start it up again. Any difference?

That didn't solve it, sorry. It almost seems to me that Firefox is incorrectly reading the Windows UI zoom, because even my top right buttons (minimize, windowed and exit) are enlarged. Is this possible? If so, can I fix it?
