I can remove new websites from today from the history and they don't reappear. The websites don't appear in the history listing just in the history sidebar and they only appear in the sidebar when set to "by most visited" and "by last visited." They don't appear if view is set to anything else. They are all old and some pages no longer exist. If deleted or "forget about" they disappear and then reappear when the sidebar is closed and reopened, sometimes without closing.

Chosen solution

If you want to do a complete clear of your history I certainly recommend looking into a program called CCleaner it is safe and free! I use CCleaner to clear out my history for Firefox personally.

The free version of CCleaner removed the old history items. I guess we will never know why they couldn't be removed by firefox. Microrobot - have you used the other functions of CCleaner like registry cleaner?
