When I "Detach" an email attachment and save it elsewhere, why is the attachment still accessible in the email?

I'm using Win 7 Home Premium OS. Thunderbird 31.7.0. After "detaching" an email attachment and saving it, the email size reflects the detachment. However, the attachment size reflects the size of the original attachment and I can still access it inside TB. After I detach and then right-click on the attachment, the "Detach" and "Delete" options are grayed out. Why is that? Is the attachment still in TB?

Chosen solution

Detaching attachments from emails means replacing the attachment with a link to it in the file system.
