In the last hour and with no updated to Firefox, my shortcuts suddenly open in a new tab instead of the tab I am currently in. UP until a little bit ago, the shortcut always opened in whatever tab I was in when I clicked the link. I have made no changes.

Are you talking about a desktop shortcut / a bookmark / a link on the current window / tab?

Right click the link and select Open In . . . .

Type about:preferences#general<enter> in the address bar. Go down to the tabs menu.

It is a bookmark on the bookmarks toolbar. I have had that same bookmark on the toolbar for years and it has always opened correctly until yesterday.

My preferences are set correctly.

I rebooted and that didn't help. I also did a foxfire refresh and that also did not fix it.

Type about:config<enter> in the address bar. If a warning screen comes up, press the Be Careful button. At the top of the screen is a search bar.

Check this setting

browser.link.open_newwindow =

1 = Current window / tab 2 = New window 3 = New tab most recent window.

If this is about opening an external link in Firefox (default browser) then you can set the browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external pref to 1 on the about:config page. The default is -1 to use browser.link.open_newwindow
