I prefer to have the message I am replying to simply added at the foot of my reply, identified as "original message" or similar remark, rather than adding formatting, colored lines and the like. In past experience with email clients I have been able to suppress this formatting. How can I accomplish this in Thunderbird?

reply to your self and see if what you get is not what your expect. Thunderbird's vertical line is not included by default.
