I am changing email provider, and I don't want to lose my old emails when Thunderbird syncs to the new provider. How do I insure that I do not lose my old email

My email address is not changing, but my service provider is. I want to make sure that none of my existing emails are lost when I synchronize to the new service provider. There are a number of us with this problem. Before changing the providers, Thunderbird would update the email everyday so that it mirrored what was stored on the server. Obviuosly, I don't want to lose all my existing emails on my computer when I sync to a new provider. Is ther some way to only download the new email, and not delete the emails on my computer?
