I was asked to register with mozilla support. I have done so. Does this mean that my mozilla support account is different to my firefox log in? If so why do I need a separate account to get help in firefox.

I assume you mean Firefox Sync account with Firefox log in.
Support Mozilla and Firefox Sync are two different things.
Firefox Sync is a service offered by Mozilla to synchronize profile data from Firefox between several devices, whereas Support Mozilla is the support website for all Mozilla products, such as Firefox, Thunderbird, Firefox OS…
The only common thread between Firefox Sync and Support Mozilla is Mozilla, but actually Support Mozilla is mainly hosted by volunteers (and I am part of this).

Thanks, that clears things up. I do appreciate that Support Mozilla is kept afloat by hard working volunteers and I thank you all.
