Firefox 40.0 for Android will not play audio from sites that worked in version 39 and earlier

Several sites that had working audio on Firefox 39 and earlier now complain of Flash not being present in Firefox 40.0 on Android (Lollipop). Other sites continue to work fine and I have not had problems with videos. Two sites that will no longer play audio are npr.org and duolingo.com. Both complain I need Flash, which other Android browsers play them without. I tried spoofing the user agent (using the Phony add-in) but this did not help. Oddly, video on npr.org plays just fine. It would be nice to get the audio working again on these sites as I don't really want to have a backup browser installed just for them.

Other browsers may have built in video players. If a site asks for a plugin, there might also be an option to long tap on the video and open them with an app on the device.

Try this to find out more what Firefox for Android and video

Thanks for your response, but videos are not having this problem, only audio. Duolingo does not have anything that could be pressed to start them and now just pops up a notice that I need Flash, even though it played on earlier versions of Firefox for Android. NPR complains when I press the play button on the audio, or replaces it with a notice that Flash is missing. Again, these played fine prior the version 40 update.

I have confirmed this that this happens in all browsers in desktop as well. I am guessing that the site has Flash as a primary player through out the site.

On the android device do you have Flash installed as an android app?

No, I don't have Flash installed on the Android phone, but the problem is that I never did and audio worked on both these sites prior to updating to Firefox 40. In Firefox 39 the audio played without Flash, and it plays in other mobile browsers without Flash, so there has to be something else causing it.

Thanks.

duolingo.com audio works in on 4.4 however npr.org does never load the radio 24 hour audio. There was a suggestion to wipe the cache partition of the app however, I might check audio settings first.

I found a work around for npr.org. Click on the three dot menu and [ ] Request the Desktop Site and the audio works on both.

The update to Firefox 41 has mostly fixed this. There is sometimes a delay that wasn't in Firefox 39, but the audio on these sites is playing again unlike in Firefox 40.
