Firefox for mac open 2 windows when click link from another application

more options

On Mac OS 10.10.5, Firefox 41.0.1. I set Firefox as my default browser. When completely quit Firefox, then click a link from another application say Skype, PDF etc. It opens 2 windows, one is blank page (I set my home page to about:blank), another is the link I clicked.

I get similar behaviour on Windows if I've had multiple Firefox windows open simultaneously prior to closing them and opening a new link. Do you keep multiple windows open or just the one?

There is a support article on this sort of behaviour: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-repeatedly-opens-empty-tabs-or-windows (I think what I saw was the session getting restored).
