That's a good bunch of background info!
The articles of interest can be found under https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/products/firefox/fix-problems/slowness-or-hanging. Since this is a fresh install, your Health Report may not have much in it, but you could check it out anyway: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-health-report-understand-your-browser-perf#w_how-to-view-your-firefox-health-report.
To save time and reading, try Safe Mode, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode, to rule out Themes, Extensions, and hardware acceleration - if the slowness is gone, it's time to remove these one by one until you find the culprit. This does not affect plugins, so those should be checked separately at https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/plugincheck/ - or deactivated altogether.
If the Safe Mode quick fix doesn't help, and the generic advice in the articles doesn't help, then malware scans are probably the next step. This list of scanners has solved many an issue, and yes, sometimes you need to run more than just one or two: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware#w_how-do-i-get-rid-of-malware.
If the scans come through clean, then it might be legitimate software like antivirus causing issues (since the performance of other browsers is not affected, it may not be a general cause like 3D games/content or torrents).
