I liked the previous version as I now get junk mail, which is not on the server. I am tired on unsubscribing every day and it fills up my mailbox and the next day it is more junk.

I strongly suggest you stop unsubscribing. If it is truly spam, i.e. unsolicited commercial email, then telling them your email address, or at least confirming that yours is a valid and active email address, only encourages more of the same.

I suggest you mark this unwanted stuff as Junk. Over time, Thunderbird will learn to recognise it and start to deal with it automatically. Select, right-click, Mark, As Junk. Or press the 'j' key.

What do you think has changed in Thunderbird? I've been using it for years and have seen no recent change in the way it manages junk or spam.
