I'm currently asking on behalf of a user - in normal circumstances I would completely uninstall firefox and then reinstall it again, but unfortunately that's not possible right now. Basically, the issues are as above - when you open up firefox or a new tab, the screen comes up as white. No home page, no favourites part. When you try to search in the search bar, you can type but when you press enter or click the arrow nothing happens. It doesn't freeze or anything, it just doesn't do the search. Finally, and the most frustrating problem, is that whenever you put in a saved username that should have a password attached to it, it doesn't put the password in. On new sites, it doesn't ask if you want to save a password for that site, and on sites where she's already got a password saved, they don't enter. I've looked in the saved passwords - they're in there - and I've removed them to attempt to add them back in again, and nothing.

This started on Monday, and I'd appreciate any input. Right now my best advice is to use google chrome ...

The only thing I haven't done out of these is run it in safe mode - I keep meaning to, but she is still trying to work around having these problems and I can only intrude on her computer so long before I'm becoming a nuisance.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; never remember history).

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
