I love the thumbnails on newtabs in firefox, but recently there have been a bunch of suggested thumbnails from sites like Quartz and Insider which are really getting on my nerves. I don't want firefox to suggest any sites to me on my customized thumbnails list. How can I disable suggestions for thumbnails on my newtab pages?

See:

Directory tiles that Firefox shows on the about:newtab page are saved in the directoryLinks.json file in the parent location of the disk cache. If you want to remove and disable the sponsored directory links on the about:newtab page then use these steps: You can set the browser.newtabpage.directory.source pref to an empty string on the about:config page.

  • browser.newtabpage.directory.source = <empty>
  • browser.newtabpage.directory.ping = <empty>

You can delete the directoryLinks.json file in the parent location of the disk cache to remove the currently stored directory links.

  • delete directoryLinks.json

See the about:cache page for the location of the disk cache and go one level up.

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

"AppData" (XP: Application Data; Mac: ~/Library; Linux: ~/.mozilla) is a hidden folder.

Hi, if you pin your own sites to the New Tab page, they will eventually replace all the Firefox suggested ones - Customize your Firefox New Tab page.
