This is common when messages are pasted from word processing packages.

Email used UTF-8 unfortunately many favored fonts used by folk are not UTF-8 so when it comes time to render their mail they get rubbish replacements for the things not supported.

Some relief can also be found in changing the character encoding. View menu (alt+V) > Text encoding.
