How do you get to have "hundreds of tabs" open? Is this intentional, something you choose to do?

It is not intentional. Happens each time I try to open an email attachment.

email is via Mozilla Thunderbird Browser default is Mozilla Firefox

I never open messages in tabs. I do all my email work in what many think of as the "preview pane" below the list of messages. The only tabs I have are those built in for the Calendar and the occasional search results. So I don't have any experience of having "hundreds of tabs" and hence what they do when opening an attachment.

When you have opened a message in a tab, you can simply close that tab using the X in its handle. See attached image #1.

If you have many tabs open, you can close all but one by right-clicking the open tab and selecting "Close other tabs". See attached image #2.

If you're not opening messages in tabs yourself, then we need to work harder to find out what it is that is opening them.
