Double-clicking on "star" to add bookmark to specific folder sporadic/not working

Running Firefox 44.0 on OSX El Capitan.

For years I've kept my bookmarks organized into different folders that all live in the Bookmarks Toolbar. And for years whenever I wanted to bookmark a page to a specific folder I would simply double-click the star located just to the right of the address bar and from the "Edit this Bookmark" window that pops up I would be able to "file" the bookmark under the appropriate folder.

About 2 weeks ago this process stopped working, or rather, it became very sporadic and random in whether or not it works.

Sometimes I double-click on the star, get the pop-up menu, and am able to "file" the bookmark as usual.

Sometimes, however, (maybe about half the time or slightly more?) the "Edit this Bookmark" window DOES NOT pop up, and instead what happens when I double-click on the star is that two duplicate bookmarks get created under "Unsorted Bookmarks," and then I have to manually go and "re-file"/delete those.

Any ideas what's going on?

Chosen solution

As I explained above: you should see this double-click as two separate single clicks with the left mouse button. The double-click is in this case processed as two single clicks and works if the tab hasn't been bookmarked yet, but if you would double-click the highlighted star because the current tab is already bookmarked then you open and immediately close the edit this bookmark dialog and nothing seems to happen.

Note that a double-click on the star isn't meant to be used to bring up the "Edit this bookmark" dialog. When the website isn't bookmarked yet then a single click will bookmark the current tab to the unsorted folder. A second click on the highlighted star will then bring up the "Edit this bookmark" dialog.

Some information about how bookmarking works:

  • click the star on the Navigation toolbar to bookmark the page in the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder and the star turns blue to indicate this
  • use Bookmarks > "Bookmark This Page" (Command/Ctrl+D) to bookmark the page in the Bookmarks Menu folder (you need to confirm this)
  • "Bookmark This Page" can be accessed via the right-click context menu in the browsing area or via the Bookmarks menu in the Firefox menu button drop down or menu bar
  • when the URL in the current tab is bookmarked and the star is blue highlighted then "Bookmark This Page" and the tooltip of the star changes to "Edit This Bookmark" and you can click this highlighted star or use "Edit This Bookmark" (Command/Ctrl+D) to edit the properties of this bookmark like name and location and move this bookmark to another folder and click the Remove button to remove this bookmark

That's bizarre, because like I said, that's precisely what I've been doing for YEARS and up until recently, it always, consistently brought up the "Edit this bookmark" box.

Pretty frustrating, and adds an extra time-consuming step, but I guess it is what it is for some reason.

Double-clicking on the star to bring up that dialog is really something that should be a standard feature - it works quickly and conveniently.

OK, still doesn't explain why the double-clicking thing worked for a long time and then suddenly stopped working - maybe it's a result of the latest update or something. From now on I guess I'll just use "command-D" as that also accomplishes what I'm looking for.
