Chosen solution

Christ 1 Is the term 'user-friendly' familiar to you? No, didn't think so. But thanks for your help, anyway. Problem solved.

What instructions? What is the status of the Lightning add-on in the Add-Ons Manager? Is it installed and enabled?

more options

Hi Christ1, I followed the answer you posted to someone else but Lightning wont install and if I download it I just get the message that Windows cannot open the file.

more options

Windows can't open it because it's meant to be opened by Thunderbird. In your Thunderbird add-ons manager, click on the icon to the left of the search bar (top right hand corner of the window): this has the option 'install add-on from file'.

I clicked the 'install from file' button. I got a bar saying 'Lightning would be added when Thunderbird is restarted'. I clicked 're-start now'. Nothing happened. I closed Thunderbird and restarted but no change. The add-on manager looks like image attached.

The screenshot is useless. What's needed is a screenshot of the Extensions tab with the entry for Lightning visible.

Here's the screenshot of the extensions tab as requested.

Closer, but we're not quite there yet. What's not visible in the screenshot is the status of Lightning, i.e. whether it's enabled or not. Please try again.

What is your Thunderbird version?

Thanks for your patience. I'm assuming from the 'disable' button that it's enabled. Here's another screenshot. I'm on version 38.6 updated yesterday.

sorry that was the previous shot, here's the latest.

Do you not have these buttons?

more options

Your screenshot looks good now, and it says Lightning is installed and enabled. However, you should have Lightning 4.0.6 by now. So something went wrong with the update.

Close Thunderbird. Download the full installer from https://www.mozilla.org/thunderbird/ and run it. No data will get lost. Start Thunderbird.

No, Zemos, I have the buttons above.

I was also having the same problem on Windows Home 64bit after Thunderbird 38.6 update. It is as if Lightning didn't exist. It didn't show up under the extensions, addons etc.. even though it was running before the update. I don't know why but it wouldn't install even from the Add-ons extensions. I tried 3 times, but for some reason it did take the 4th try. Weird

I have just downloaded and installed 38.6. No change whatsoever.

Thanks Oranhouse, at least I know it's not just me.

Christ1, After a fourth attempt at a reinstall there is still no change and I am still on and being offered Lightning 4.0.5.2 Is there another place I can download Lightning 4.0.6? It does not seem to be available via https://www.mozilla.org/thunderbird/ or https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/projects/calendar/

Christ1 Firefox prevented the installation of an unverified add-on. And I'm going to bed. What a heap. Thanks for trying.

There is a reason why I posted the link to an article about how to install extensions for Thunderbird. You're supposed to read it.
