Enter server and port info via Account Settings: 'Server Settings' for the incoming server and 'Outgoing (SMTP) Server' for sending mail. When you compose and send mail a wizard should pop up asking you for your SMTP password: there's an option there for Thunderbird to remember it, so once you've entered it you shouldn't need to do it again. Likewise for incoming mail. Click on 'Get New Messages' and it should connect to the server and then ask you (in a pop up wizard) for your account password.

And I have just created and added an aol email account to Thunderbird. Works fine after visiting the aol.com home page to fill in the multiple captchas.

It seems to like you use the webmail portal at least once before email is totally happy.
