While a message is deleted from his open reading window the trash is bypassed and the message definitively gone. Bad if you hit "Suppr/Del" touch by accident.
By accident I hit the "Suppr/Del" message on my keyb while reading an important message. The message was delete without warning, nothing in the trash, nothing everywhere anymore include the profile file INBOX.
Is there a way to no be able to delete a message, or to get at least a warning while hitting the touch 'Del/Suppr' in an open message windows?
Is that a bug or a function to tweak somewhere ?
The function allowing to read a message in the open message windows, then delete and open automatically the next message is pretty bad IMHO and it seems very buggy from my search on web about my problem...
Is there a way to deactivate this full function which include the delete issue?
I test 5 times... it's all the time lost and not transfer in the trash, if the message is delete form the general list where all email are shown there is no issue and the message goes in trash... Unless of course I hit Shift + Del in same time.
Thanks for reading.

FYI: Yes it was IMP and a french provider Free.fr the name of the folder was simply Trash on the server but on thunderbird that was more a mess.
As you where talking about name of IMAP folder I tested with a Gmail account and it was working = Deleted email by whatever the way where place in right Trash folder.
So I went to "Account settings" and for the account considered, I saw that there wasn't any location in "Server Setting" "When I delete a message move it to this folder :" So I create a folder, (probably a local one) and I point it out as the right direction for the Deleted emails in the account.
Thank for your help and the lead about Folder name, Matt!

Shift + Delete bypassed the trash folder. It always has and is a feature, not a bug. You might want to have a look at this discussion about re enabling the confirmation dialog https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1046946
Opening the next message is also by design. On the toolbar > Options > display > advanced has an option to close the tab or windows instead of open the next message if that is what you want to have happen.
Tkx a lot for your Answer Matt, but you aren't responding to my issue.
1- I'm not using Shift + Delete , only Delete alone and the message(s) is/are suppressed without to go in the trash. This is a bug or a bad feature as Del alone could be pressed by accident.
2- So following your other idea I also activate the :user_pref("mail.warn_on_shift_delete", true); in the file prefs.js, with the hope to have have at least a warning as a temporary solution. But it didn't work either:
- In the all message windows, no problem it is now asking me via the confirmation box, if I'm sure of my delete action, while I pressing Shift + Del and not when I'm pressing Del alone. Normal behavior!
- without surprise, if I press Del alone, it no open any warning box message an the email is still deleted whit nothing in the trash

right click your account and look at the subscribe.... select whatever is the deleted folder.
Then repeat your account settings to set the server folder to the right location trash on free.fr
Was the name used by Thunderbird a french translation of "trash" I have seen localization issues raise their ugly heads a few times with IMAP servers in English and Thunderbird in other languages.
Nice I will clean up all the sync folder on each account. It's is name Trash on free.fr without translation. I think I deleted the folder before, so the 'sync' (subscribe) was disable
