My Apple icloud email has stopped working with Thunderbird. I get a connection warning, after deleting the email account and reinstalling it in Thunderbird, I get the following message: "Configuration could not be verified - Is the username or password wrong?"

Chosen solution

this question is about getting the following message: "Configuration could not be verified - Is the username or password wrong?" So the response was specific to that issue.

But you say....Word for word I have 'Login to server imap.mail.me.com failed.'...I have the same problem. Your query is not talking about the same error message and therefore may not be about the same issue. You should create your own question. But first make sure your Firewall, which may be part of an Anti-virus package is set to allow Thunderbird.

You had a mail account which got a connection warning. It would be useful to know what that warning was...word for word. But as you have deleted that mail account, that warning may or maynot have been useful.

"Configuration could not be verified - Is the username or password wrong?" That message could mean any of the following: The username = usually is the full email address. Please check the UserName has been set as the full email address.

The password = same password you would use to access the webmail account. Make sure it is exactly the same - make sure 'Caps Lock' is not selected on keyboard. Verify password works by logging on to webmail.

If password and UserName are correct then they may not be correct for the server settings you are using.

Please post the following info as I'm assuming you have created the mail account, but it is not as yet working s expected.

In Thunderbird Help > Troubleshooting Information Click on 'Copy text to clipboard' In this forum question, right click in a 'Post a Reply' text box and select 'Paste' You can edit/remove all info on fonts and printers, but nothing else.

Theoretical answers are not helpful here.

Word for word I have 'Login to server imap.mail.me.com failed.'

I have the same problem. The Thunderbird automatic mail setup does not find correct settings for iCloud mailservers for a start. The Apple support document is here;

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT202304

but this support document is so vague. Like the usename format - username before @icloud.com, but try it with username@icloud.com if it doesn't work.

SSL must be used - but try STARTTLS if this doesn't work. Selecting STARTTLS changes the default port from 993 to 143, is this valid?

No prompting about password formats - all except plaintext format seem to be rejected with an error in Thunderbird.

Absolutely no mention of app-specific passwords if 2FA is enabled on the iCloud account.

So, in summary the Apple document doesn't seem to give the specific information the Thunderbird wizard requires and then the minefield of manual setup is forced upon the end user.

I'm going to give the same information to Apple via feedback where possible.

The above was the exact same error when using the auto-config. 'Configuration could not be verified - is the username or password wrong?' Sorry if that wasn't clear.

There is no option but to proceed with manual config if the auto config does not work. The problem is setting up Thunderbird to work with iCloud email.

It would appear Apple's information is incomplete and Mozilla's non-existant save for user questions that have gone unanswered or answered generically.

I am running Avast! Free AV with Windows Firewall. Thunderbird works when picking up Microsoft email. It is just the iCloud email that is a problem.

I have tried deleting the old profile and reinstalling Thunderbird. Still no progress.

It would seem my primary identity is not what I thought it was. I confirmed it by checking my account settings in iCloud from the 'Mail' settings cog. It is listed against iCloud IMAP, the alias is listed against iCloud Mail alias.

Although my Apple ID is personal@hotmail.com, I had set the primary IMAP address as work@icloud.com then the alias as personal@icloud.com.

So I can confirm the settings for Thunderbird

The mail server is: imap.mail.me.com Port: 993 SSL/TLS Username: primaryIMAP (without @icloud.com) Password: [***apps-spec-pass-word***] (normal password - i.e. clear text, 2FA generated)

Outgoing server: smtp.mail.me.com Port: 587 STARTTLS Username & Password as above

more options

incoming server name: imap.mail.me.com port: 993 Connection Security: SSL/TLS Authentication Method: Normal Password

outgoing smtp server name: smtp.mail.me.com port: 465 Connection Security: SSL/TLS Authentication Method: Normal Password

Username = full email address Password: password you use to access webmail account

re : Avast Avast has issues with SSL, so this would be the first thing to check. Please read info at this link as it has all details and instructions:

Just got your reply after sending my response. The server settings you have mentioned sound correct, so check out the Avast info.

Haven't encountered any such problem with my settings, but thanks for the heads up.
