I need Insert Character and Symbols to white in Portuguese because your spellcheck in Portuguese of Brazil is incomplete.

Chosen solution

Are you composing in HTML? You need to be doing so to be able to see the Insert|Characters and Symbols option in the menu.

You may have set to use HTML previously, but I suspect that settings like this one can swap states during an update.

Tools|Account Settings|{select server}|Composition & Addressing→Compose messages in HTML format should be ticked.

But there is another approach. I like the abcTajpu add-on which gives you access to the whole Unicode character set, in both plain text and HTML.

This says it's a Firefox add-on but it works in Thunderbird too.

I think that Zenos may have misunderstood the question. In my case (and I suspect in the OP's too) I can see the Insert|Characters and Symbols option as clear as day, but when I click it, nothing happens (unlike the Insert|Mathematical Symbols option, which opens perfectly normally.

Further advice please!

Tried again today, and found that on clicking Insert|Characters and Symbols it opened up normally - very odd! Anyway, relief all round.
