won't check for new incoming emails, without exiting and re-entering Thunderbird. Also, when deleting emails, approximately 40% of the time, the mail service reports "thunderbird not responding" and essentially locks up the computer, for 1 to 5 minutes.

Wrt Charter: There was a similar problem with GoDaddy a while ago which did affect many people, and GoDaddy were simply denying there was a problem at all. In the end they silently fixed it, whatever the problem was.

GoDaddy reference fyi: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1260724#c10

There have been a lot of complaints in this forum recently from people using Charter about the very same problem. You'll need to talk to Charter. Tell them you're not the only one with the problem.

Wrt AVG: Anti-virus software is know to cause problems with Thunderbird, this forum is full of similar complaints. To avoid these problems, here are some generic instructions.

Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird

Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.

Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.

Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.

Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.

And no, following these instructions won't you make less secure.

Keep it working. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird

Tried both suggestions and also discussed with Charter. They saw no problem on their part and suggested instead that I consider switching to G-Mail. Same problems today,as in the months previous.

Why not fix the existing problems that have been reported time after time, before asking for donations??

Did you even think before you posted this? You are using other peoples time and computing resources and feel you do not have an obligation to contribute something. It is in my view a sad reflection on you.

Matt.. you must be very naive or part of the problem, yourself. Why would anyone donate to a project, that obviously has had problems for some time, with no one attempting to address them? Show people that you are genuinely interested in making a working product instead of panhandling for $$$, and you will get "donations".

It is not just me that has these questions and problems. Take a minute to review several other previous queries. This is supposed to be a support and help blog, isn't it?

I have said all I intend to, in regard you your desire to donate. Personally your comments come across as naive and simplistic. But what would I know. If you do not wish to donate, no one is going to force you. I have a moral objection to requiring the user to pay, but if donation do not work other avenues will be pursued.

That Thunderbird has issues, I am acutely aware. Mozilla have left a decade of them for us to address. look at them, they are no secret. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ You can even register your own if you like. If a volunteer developer has time they might look at it.

Unfortunately I am exceedingly doubtful your issues have anything to do with Thunderbird. Christ1 started by asking if you were using charter, that is because those with this issue almost all (all I have seen) use charter. Why not try it with Gmail or Yahoo or even outlook.com and see if it does the same things as suggested by Charter? after all you are saying you are having issues with one server. What is to say it is not the problem.

jez42,

It is understandable that you might be frustrated. Perhaps the following will help...

> won't check for new incoming emails, without exiting and re-entering Thunderbird.

This precise symptom is indeed describe by other Charter users. In the June-July time frame we had a spike of maybe two dozen reports of Charter users having trouble getting email. (Considering the hugeness of Charter this isn't very many, but regardless it was a spike.)

If the same issue reproduces in older versions of Thunderbird [1] then this suggests a strong possibility of a problem at Charter. Let us know what you find.

> Also, when deleting emails, approximately 40% of the time, the mail service reports "thunderbird not responding" and essentially locks up the computer, for 1 to 5 minutes.

I do not see that you have created a topic for this. Perhaps you should (and then also post the URL here) so someone can help you. (it's best to create separate topics for different issues)

[1] Thunderbird versions can be downloaded from https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases ... for your testing I suggest you might pick https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/38.6.0/
