Hello,

I've updated my windows 7 to windows 10 last week. Since then, I can't view my e-mail on hotmail.com I get the error message "The proxy server is refusing connections". I can however view my hotmail on Microsoft Edge, so the problem limits itself to FireFox. When I change the proxy settings to not use any proxy, it still won't work. And when I restart FireFox, the setting is set back to using the proxy settings from the system. I don't know what to do.

Hello, very sorry for the delay.

First try deleting all references to Hotmail, as shown under the heading 'How do I remove a single website from my history?' in this article - Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox, then try the site (not from an old bookmark) again.

If that didn't help, try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

If Safe Mode doesn't help, you can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Note that not all removal programs will detect all malware, so you may need to run several or all of them.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Incidentally, you have 2 versions of Shockwave Flash - which can cause problems, so the oldest should be removed from your machine -

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us. Thank you!

This is strange. I wanted to test this out today, but it suddenly worked again. Strange. If it acts up again I will try your solutions.

Today it happened again. I uninstalled a plugin which I suddenly remembered that caused problems for me (The HOLA plugin) and now it works fine again! Thanks!
