If your "data is on other partitions" why do you say it will be overwritten?

Thunderbird stores its data in its profile, which in Linux is ~/.thunderbird

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb

When re-installing Linux, there should be no need to overwrite the /home folder.

I re-installed 14.04 alongside the failed 16.04 install. When I try to login to 16.04 I can only get the command line. However, I can find where my profiles are but I cannot access other partitions on my hard drive or even a USB flash drive so I can copy my files over. Any suggestions please?
