Type about:preferences#general<enter> in the address bar. Under Tabs, mark Open new windows in a new tab instead.

DID THIS MANY TIMES. NO HELP. VERY NOVICE WITH THIS TYPE OF STUFF. PLEASE HELP WITH STEP BY STEP, IF POSSIBLE. ONCE THE NEW WINDOWS OPEN FIREFOX GETS UNRESPONSIVE OR VERY SLOW.
