Thunderbird keeps wanting to download firefox 48.02 on Mac and locks up Thunderbird were you can not get mail.

Every time my wife attempts to get her mail, it ask for the password. One can only enter the first letter, the Thunderbird ask what you want to do with a exe file fot firefox 48.02 and then losksup the Macbook pro and you must force quit thunderbird. It is a viscous circl.e

You have lost me. Unless of course the file you are talking about is an attachment to an email you are double clicking on.

I suggest you uninstall Thunderbird and install it again.
