Prior to connecting Thunderbird to the mail server for the first time, how do you setup an Existing Mail Account with settings so it won't affect mail on the server? Some mail clients are malware that do things like erase the mail off the server as soon as you set up the account.

In the Mail Account Setup window after clicking the Continue button, a Advanced config button appears instead. The Advanced config button opens a window that says, "Error Creating Account Incoming server already exists."

If the account already exists you can't set it up once again.

Bad things can happen due to a malware infection or anti-virus software acting up resulting in loss of data. This is what backups are for. You can restore any lost data from a backup.

The default behavior for POP accounts is to remove messages from the server after downloading messages. In that case you'd need to check the option to 'Leave messages on the server'. Obviously you can only do that after setting up the account.

No sure what you mean, but if that's your opinion you're probably better off using webmail.
