I've not changed TB in a while, only the update. No extra plugins, etc. Recently, TB will start up, work, then start hanging with the rainbow-wheel on MacOS Sierra (up to date OS). I terminate the program and re-start, same behavior; equally, reinstalling it did not solve the problem.

I do "sleep" my Mac at times, so I wonder if something became corrupted or?

Make sure Thunderbird is not running, go to ~/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.thunderbird.plist and move that file to your desktop (it may be corrupted allright). Then try to start Thunderbird. Does that help?

After about a week or more, and restarting the app, reinstalling, suddenly yesterday it just started working properly. I'm puzzled, but it feels like a bug somewhere. When the system sleeps, there should be no cached connections. I didn't have to remove the plist file.

Interesting, thank you.

One thing I forgot to write above is that you could monitor TB’s activity when the issue returns using the Activity Manager or in the status line. Chances are this starts happening during automatic email retrieval only, and may be good for investigating by developers. I cannot explain at this point and am not an experienced Mac user, but keep us posted if the issue returns.
