Thunderbird will open and display the inbox BUT immediately is "NOT RESPONDING". Cannot read my email for two or three weeks now. Mac OS X 10.7

Thunderbird is in permanent "NOT RESPONDING" mode. It will launch and open the inbox to the same list of emails where it began not responding. I have no idea how to fix this. Probably two weeks, maybe three weeks. I need access to the local folders I created.
