Converted Netscape to Thunderbird 3.1.7 want to update to latest, update dosent work, can i download over top 3.1?

more options

I was running Netscape email and was told I had to use an older version of Thunderbird (picked3.1.7) to get it to copy my folders, address, etc. Email is ok. The Auto update = server not found. Need steps to update to latest version. Download/overwrite? Save/restore files? I'm running Windows 10, Firefox 53.0.3. Thanks.

Chosen solution

I did the backups and downloaded 52.1.1 over 3.1.7 and everything worked fine. All my mail was there. The problem is solved.

First read this article about the Thunderbird Profile, and backup the Profile Folder in case something goes wrong.

Then Download & install the latest version of Thunderbird over top of the old Thunderbird installation.

I've never seen an update this extreme before, so please let me know how it goes!
