Desperate - Need to restore this very important file: I spent a couple of years accumulating data to go on the file below. I cut and pasted this info on Wednesday May 31, 2017 to this new file. Everything went fine until Sunday, June 4th when I went to save the file. The content from the file started erasing itself so swiftly that I wasn't able to stop myself from saving the file. I was so dumbfounded as to how this could happen. All my work gone. How was this possible?

You may need to inquire with Microsoft. Here on the Mozilla forums, we are not especially familiar with issues affecting Microsoft Office documents. (And your question doesn't seem to be about Firefox.)
Since you are on Windows 8 then you can check if there are shadow copies of the file available.
You can check in Windows Explorer if there is a previous version of the file available.
- right-click: Properties -> Previous Versions
