Was it POP or IMAP? Had you given any thought as to where these valuable documents were actually stored? Had you not sought a way to make backups or archive them independently?

If it was IMAP then the messages were in all likelihood stored on your provider's server, not on your own computer. If so, when you changed providers, you lost access to them when you switched to a different server.
