Hi,

In Firefox 55b12 (win10 x86 and x64) I have issues connection to some HTTPS websites, like: https://mail.google.com/ or https://ehsanakhgari.org/

The error message is 'SSL_ERROR_RX_UNEXPECTED_APPLICATION_DATA'

The issue is related to the network from my employer: the issue goes away when using a different network.

In Firefox 54 however, everythings works. (also in Chrome)

I have tried different machines, different profiles, etc etc and the problem persists.

What changed between 54 and 55 that this appears? And of course, how to fix? Preferably without changing anything in the network of my employer.

Hi,

I have raised a bug in bugzilla for this. In short, the problem is broken support for TLS1.3 in the corperate middleware.

A workaround is: 1. Go to about:config 2. Find setting 'security.tls.version.max' 3. Change value from '4' to '3'.

Are you using the same profile folder for different Firefox versions?

If you do then you should use separate profiles.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache":

  • Options/Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks and history and cookies and passwords and cache and exceptions, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

Create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Hi, thanks.

However, as mentioned it is NOT profile related. Different profiles, safe mode and different machines all have the problem. The issue is somewhere in the network as switching network resolves the issue.

This is a regression between ff55 and ff54

If it isn't profile related then you need to check the connection settings and check for issues caused by other (security) software or malware on your computer.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen or hold down the Shift key) to see if that has effect.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
