How do you group incoming emails together that have same subject heading?

With previous programs I was able to combine together all emails replying to the same subject heading instead of having them individually listed in my inbox. I would like to do the same with Thunderbird.

It seems to me that you're describing a conversation or thread, so I'd start by using Threaded view, which shows messages clustered together by their logical connections. This flusters some users because messages are now shown out of strict chronological order. View|Sort By|Threaded.

Some users like the Google Conversations add on which attempts to mimic Gmail's layout.

To answer your question as you put it, I'd sort on subject then use View|Sort|Grouped By Sort - but I don't think that's really what you're after.
