CNN website has ads down the right hand side of the page, at least one of them blinks repeatedly and is very annoying. Can anything be done to prevent this?

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for a good ad / pop-up blocker.
