In the "Default Apps" menu in Windows settings, Firefox appears twice, as in the attached screenshot. Tried resetting default apps and setting it back to Firefox, the issue still remains.

I'm not sure what you mean by "if both start Firefox" in this context. Also, how can I delete an entry from that menu?

Do you have multiple Firefox program folders? Normally that would only occur if the 64-bit version was installed side-by-side with the 32-bit version. You could check:

  • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

No, I don't have multiple Firefox program folders.

Ok, I've nailed the issue down. The issue starts to appear after clicking "Set as default" browser button from within Firefox. Setting Firefox as the default browser from the Default Apps menu (without ever clicking the Set as default button in Firefox) does not trigger the issue. I say this is a bug in Firefox.

Have you set it as Default in Win 10 ? Settings --> Apps --> Default Apps if something else is default may have to click that to change to Firefox.

There are other reasons for the 2nd Icon. A bug has to be duplicated and on other machines.

So right click the Icon and Delete it in the Menu. This can be used to delete other things and to uninstall some unwanted Microsoft Programs.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

There is no option to delete the app from that menu in Windows. As I said, using the Set as default button located in the Firefox settings triggers the issue. If you never click it, the issue does not appear. As a matter of fact, while looking for a solution, I found a similar post from another user on this forum with the exact same issue. Also on Reddit.

The setting is usually ticked as a standard install. I have Win10, I can right click and have options as can others.

If this is the only issue I suggest leaving it alone then. Or : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note : This should be Pinned and run weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

Delete the Firefox entries in Win10 Start Menu.

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 57.0.2 with a Full Version Installer https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Long standing quirk with Windows OS's; but I am surprised that still happens with Windows 10. Usually there's a stray bunch of Registry keys hanging around in the Windows Registry from an older Firefox installation. Usually figured out by the user when they try to uninstall an older version of Firefox and discover that Firefox is removed altogether.

No big deal of the user did that, just install the latest Firefox version again and it will pickup the "old" Profile with no "loss" to the user.

Well, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox many times, and I also tried with an empty (brand new) profile. Even on a brand new installation with a brand new profile, the issue happens as soon as you first click the "Make Default" button in Firefox preferences.

As I said, setting Firefox as the default browser from within Windows settings does not cause the issue. It is an issue with that particular button in Firefox in all likelihood.

Also as I said, I am not the only one experiencing this. See here and here

Well anyway, I was able to solve my problem as I mentioned in a post above, just thought I'd note that this is most likely a small bug in Firefox.
