Why can't I cutomize the articles I receive on my homescreen from pocket. I want these articles to be more relevant to me.

I like the pocket articles but too many are completely irrelevant to me.

ex. I regularly see items about the NBA but am not a fan of the NBA, nor do I follow/read anything else about basketball.

Is there any way to more thoroughly customize the article selections?

Currently, I believe the list is anonymous, not customized to you personally, and simply shows "trending" topics among Pocket users. I don't know whether there is a way to change that (I don't log into Pocket myself).
