How do I keep ads or unexpected videos from being noisy?

On some sites I get ads that will get loud, and on other sites the link turns out (unexpectedly) to be a video and it's loud. This would not be such a big deal, but sometimes someone else is trying to sleep. What can I do, especially about the ads? I still want to be able to listen to music or programs sometimes.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for a good ad / pop-up blocker.
