For one person I get email replies from, my original text is missing from the lower pane and just my email address displayed instead where it should be. I know they have included my original text. If I click select all for the lower pane, the original text is there highlighted as selected. Likewise, if I click "reply" on their email (ie. the reply from them), their email text plus my original text show up in the reply window, so clearly my original text is there all along, just not being displayed in the lower pane. Very odd.

This does not happen for anyone else I get emails from to the same account.

This person uses yahoo mail - I don't think that is relevant as I think it must be a Thunderbird issue, but open to any suggestions!

Solution

Options->Display->Print Text Messages->When displaying quoted plain text messages-> Colour

Somehow the colour had been set to white so because the original text in a reply is defined as quoted plain text , it was invisible.

Change colour to black (or any colour except white).

Solved it.

Not completely but basic work around.

Thunderbird->Options->Display Tab->Formatting->Fonts & Colours-> Colours....

Bottom of box. Change "Override the colours specified by the content with my selections above" from "Only with High Contrast Themes" to "Always".

The original text was white on a white background. Not exactly a high contrast theme. Hence it wasn't showing up. Sadly, set to "always" means I won't see other people's themes should they use high contrast colours different to mine. How, for this one sender, it ever gets set to white on white is still a mystery if anyone feels like solving it.

Look to the sender, not the receiving mail client. You will probably find that they think they deleted reply text by changing the colour to white in the yahoo settings. Or they have changed it to white on a black background because that is what they prefer.

Happening for other mail utilities, not just Yahoo, now.

Setting to always use black and white (my colours) so original text shows in replies, means other emails don't display properly.

This is starting to become a bigger problem than it appeared at first.
