Why are you trying to change the password saved in Thunderbird? Did you change it with your provider?
I changed my password for gmail but I look at my email through thunderbird, so I thought I had to change the password in thunderbird....is that correct?
That is correct. If you told Thunderbird to remember your password and enter it for you, you need to update what is saved. When you were at gmail did you turn off the option to allow less secure apps? There seems to be a rash of people doing that here lately.
When you say, update what is saved...what does that mean? And when you said, when you were at gmail....what do you mean, when I changed the password? And to make it clear to me, I should it be allowing less secure apps? Is that correct?
Did you tell Thunderbird to remember your email password? If so when you change it with your provider, gmail, you need to change what is saved in Thunderbird. Thunderbird could care less what your password is. When you send or receive email your providers server will ask for a password. Either you enter it or you tell Thunderbird to remember it and enter it for you. If you still have an old password saved the operation is going to fail. To change what is saved go to... Options-Security-Passwords-Saved Passwords Click Show Passwords Right click the password and select Edit Password. Yes you need Less Secure Apps turned on at gmail.
Thanks for the explanation, I have done all that BUT it still telling me it isn't the right passwords! Password manager shows me I have changed it to the right one, that is why I am so perplexed! Help.
Then it is something other than an incorrect password. Unfortunately incorrect server settings also return the password error.
Go to the Thunderbird Help menu and click Troubleshooting information. Click Copy to Clipboard. Come back here and paste that into a reply window.
I can't paste that here because I am answering this on my iPad and the problem is on my laptop with thunderbird. How can I find this reply window in the support forum? I see you listed as the top 10 contributors but can't find this thread of conversation!

Go into the account settings and change the Authentication Method for both the IMAP and the SMTP servers from Normal password to OAuth2.
OK have done that, and now the dialogue boxes telling me I have the wrong password has not reappeared, , but I am not getting any messages yet as the computer seems to be really busy doing something.....don't know what. Should I just be patient? By the way, we have slow service here and that is normal.
9 June thanks so much for your help so far...you have really tried to help me. Unfortunately for me, I am now going to be out of touch by email, telephone and letter for about 6 weeks....we are 'going bush in the wilds of Fjordland in New Zealand. However, my problem is not yet solved as thunderbird is still not getting emails. So, may I resume this conversation later....and how do I do that? Cheers!
