Weird icons floating on T-Bird windows

T-Bird 52.8 on Ubuntu 18.04. After clean OS install and migrating my data to new T-Bird I get strange icons that float in my msg. list. Eventually if I scroll enough they are "used up" and the list appears normal. Screenshot included. where did these come from and how do I get rid of them? Thanks!
