As per the above, I would like to drag and drop directly from a Thunderbird POP3 email inbox to a folder open in a file explorer. I am open to using any file explorer that allows this (currently using Thunar) on Fedora LXDE. Let me know if anyone knows how to do this!

my guess is that no one has written add-ons for the desktop environment integration.

The Gnome integration was I think done by Canonical, but I really am testing a poor memory there.
