I'm trying to install Thunderbird on my new laptop and I keep getting this message. There is no "old Thunderbird." I've purged all cookies. There is no program labeled Mozilla or Thunderbird on my computer. I used Thunderbird on my old laptop, but if I can't find a solution quick-time, I'll go with another mail program. Please help!

you might not have done installing, but obviously there is a process running, probably part of a failed install. Did you try rebooting to clear the memory of failed applications. It is usually a quick fix for this sort of error.
