Is there a way to search in the middle of the screen on the start page for a private browsing window, and stop searching in the address bar? I find it really annoying that when I type in the middle of the start page of a private browsing window the search starts appearing in the address bar.

I'm not sure I understand what you are doing and what goes wrong. Is this about the search bar on the Firefox Home page?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

JonFox is talking about the Search Bar (Form) that is in the middle of a New Private Window. The moment a character is entered, it's transferred to the Address Bar. It looks by appearance to 'mimic' a Google search when on the Google site where the Search Bar is about in the middle of the page.

Maybe some CSS tricks might make the searching 'stay' in the New Private Window's Search Bar?
